Description
One of my earliest successful works, Four is a viola quartet that has enjoyed performances and won a number of prizes since its composition in 2009. It is in three movements and explores the sound of the four homogeneous instruments. The first movement is a lively and bouncy, with a rollicking tune and unstoppable momentum. The second has a calm texture, with a solo of harmonics sitting on top of shimmering chords. The final movement ricochets from classical structure to classical structure, starting as a fugue and building energy through inventions, chorales and solos before culminating in a joyful burst of excitement.
